Congress Slams Modi Govt for Abstaining from UN Gaza Ceasefire Vote: Legacy Reduced to Rubble

The Indian National Congress launched a scathing attack on the Modi-led Union Government after India abstained from voting on the UN General Assembly resolution demanding a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. The resolution, passed on June 12, 2025, was supported by 149 countries, while 19 abstained and 12 voted against.

Calling the move “extremely shameful,” the Congress said that India’s long-standing moral support for Palestine has been shattered, and the country’s “glorious legacy lies reduced to rubble.”

India has always stood for peace, justice, and human dignity. Over 60,000 lives — mostly women and children — have been lost in Palestine. Thousands are starving and aid has stopped. This is a humanitarian tragedy. Today, India has turned its back on its principles

The Congress accused the government of “bowing to Tel Aviv” and abandoning the values that once made India a global moral leader.

“These were the same principles that once made us the guiding light of leadership values. If India wants to matter on the global stage, it must show courage in the face of injustice,” the statement added.

Senior Congress leader KC Venugopal also criticized the government, noting that India now stands isolated in South Asia, BRICS, and SCO on the Gaza issue.

“India stands alone as the only country in South Asia, BRICS, and SCO to abstain on a UNGA resolution demanding a ceasefire in Gaza. A humanitarian catastrophe is unfolding and we are silent,” Venugopal posted on X.

The Congress further emphasized that true global leadership is not about volume but about conscience, urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reflect on India’s historical stance on international justice.

The resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly calls for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, where the humanitarian situation has worsened drastically amid ongoing violence and a blockade on international aid.

As global pressure mounts, India’s abstention continues to spark criticism at home, especially from opposition parties and human rights groups, who see it as a shift away from India’s traditionally principled foreign policy.
