NCW Chief Seeks Urgent Action from West Bengal Govt in Kolkata Law College Gang-Rape Case
New Delhi, India – June 28, 2025:
Taking suo motu cognisance of the alleged gang-rape of a law student in South Kolkata, National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has written to the West Bengal Chief Secretary, demanding urgent and coordinated action.
The incident reportedly took place on June 25 inside a law college in Kasba, South Kolkata. The NCW formally acknowledged the case on June 27, citing deep concerns for the victim’s safety, dignity, and well-being.
“This grave incident has shaken public conscience. The Commission remains deeply concerned,” the NCW said in its official notice.
Key Directives from NCW Chairperson:
- Ensure full police cooperation to facilitate a visit by NCW Member Dr. Archana Mujumdar to meet the victim and her family
- Conduct an immediate and confidential medical examination
- Submit internal and external medical reports to NCW within 3 days
- Provide strong security arrangements for the victim and her family
Case Details
The victim, a female student, was allegedly gang-raped inside the campus by three individuals identified as:
- Monojit Mishra (31)
- Zaib Ahmed (19)
- Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20)
All three accused were former students or staff of the same institution.
Police acted swiftly and arrested all three within 24 hours of the report.
According to the FIR, the accused will be produced before the ACJM at Alipore, South 24 Parganas, where the police will seek custodial remand for further investigation.
The NCW’s intervention highlights the growing demand for institutional accountability and swift justice in cases involving crimes against women, especially in educational institutions.
