"Aap Jaisa Koi Meri Zindagi Mey Aaye…" Remembering the Queen of Pop of South Asia on her 17th death anniversary; Nazia Hassan.
Born on 3 April 1965, Nazia Hassan started her music career at the age of 10 and became one of the most prominent singers in Pakistan and India.
Hassan made her singing debut with the successful song "Aap Jaisa Koi Meri Zindagi Mey Aaye" in the Indian film Qurbani (1980). Hassan gained overnight fame and in 1981, she won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback for the song.
Her debut album, Disco Deewane (1981) charted in 14 countries worldwide and became the best-selling Asian poprecord up until that time. This was followed by Boom Boom, Young Tarang (1984) and Hotline.
Nazia Hassan also engaged in philanthropic activities for street children, drug abuse and cancer patients. She was appointed by UNICEF as its cultural ambassador in 1991.
She received numerous national and international awards including Pakistan's highest civilian award. India’s Society Magazine included Hassan in its list of 50 people who changed lives of Indians.
Nazia Hassan died of lung cancer in London on 13 August 2000 at the age of 35.
