BJP Demands Mamata Banerjee’s Apology and Resignation Over Kolkata Gang-Rape Case, Calls Crime State-Sponsored
New Delhi, India – June 28, 2025:
In a scathing attack on the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, BJP MP Sambit Patra on Saturday claimed that the Kolkata law student gang-rape case reflects a “state-sponsored cycle of brutality”, and demanded Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s resignation and public apology.
Speaking at a press conference, Patra said:
“In a state with a woman Chief Minister, why is there so much insensitivity and cruelty towards women? The victim’s statement itself reveals the systemic rot. This gang-rape appears to be state-sponsored.”
Accused Linked to TMC Student Wing
The BJP alleged a political connection to the crime. Patra named Monojit Mishra, the main accused, as a former secretary of the TMC student wing.
“This is a brutal, politically-motivated act. Manoj Mishra has close ties to TMC leaders, including Abhishek Banerjee and Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya,” Patra said, while also referencing viral photos.
He also slammed TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee for his controversial comment:
“When a classmate rapes a friend, what can we do?” — a remark that Patra called “shocking and shameful.”
BJP Inquiry Committee Announced
Patra confirmed that BJP President JP Nadda has formed a four-member investigation committee comprising:
- Satpal Singh (former Union Minister)
- Meenakshi Lekhi (former Union Minister)
- Biplab Deb (MP)
- Manan Mishra (MP)
The committee will visit the crime scene and submit a detailed report to the BJP national leadership.
Police Arrests So Far
The Kolkata Police has arrested four individuals in connection with the case:
- Monojit Mishra (31)
- Zaib Ahmed (19)
- Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20)
- Pinaki Banerjee (55) – Security guard of South Calcutta Law College
All were either former students or staff of the college. The suspects will be presented before the ACJM at Alipore, with police seeking custodial remand for further investigation.
Background
The incident occurred on Wednesday inside the South Calcutta Law College, located in Kolkata’s Kasba area. A female student was allegedly gang-raped inside the campus premises, triggering massive political and public outrage.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance, and Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has urged the police to conduct a time-bound investigation under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
“We are not asking for clarification from Mamata Banerjee anymore. We are asking her to apologise and resign,” concluded Patra.
