Supreme Court ne Maharashtra ke local body elections par State Election Commission (SEC) ko sakht aadesh diya hai ki sabhi polls 31 January 2026 se pehle karaaye jaayen.

Ye matter Rahul Ramesh Wagh vs State of Maharashtra case ki hearing mein utha, jahan Justices Surya Kant aur Joymalya Bagchi ki bench ne SEC ko delay ke liye kafi kheencha. Court ne kaha ki unki inactivity incompetence dikhati hai.

Local body elections 2022 se OBC reservations ke dispute ki wajah se ruke hue the. Court ne pehle May 2025 mein order diya tha ki elections September 2025 tak khatam kar diye jaayen.

SEC ne court ko bataya ki delimitation process chal rahi hai aur voter lists ready hain, lekin 29 municipal corporations ke liye 50,000 EVMs ki zarurat hai. Saath hi staff shortage aur board exams ki wajah se unhone January 2026 tak ka time manga.

Lekin Justice Kant ne unke excuses ko nakara aur sakht shabdon mein kaha:
“Kya yeh elections pehli baar ho rahe hain? Yeh baat aapko pehle order ke din se pata thi. Aapki inaction se lagta hai ki aap incompetent hain.”

Unhone board exams ko bhi excuse batane se mana karte hue poochha:
“Board exams kab hote hain? Aam taur par March mein.”

Court ne SEC ko sirf ek baar ka extension diya aur clear kar diya ki ab koi aur delay bilkul tolerate nahi hoga.
