Indian Coast Guard Rescues 3 Sri Lankans Near Dhanushkodi, Inducts New Patrol Vessel ‘Adamya’

Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu – June 28, 2025:

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) successfully rescued three Sri Lankan nationals stranded on a sandbar near Adam’s Bridge, off the coast of Dhanushkodi, Tamil Nadu, officials confirmed on Saturday.

According to the Coastal Security Group Police, the Sri Lankans were abandoned in Indian waters by an unidentified boat that originated from Sri Lanka. They were found on a sandbar near Adam’s Bridge and promptly rescued by ICG personnel.

“Three Sri Lankans who had set off from Sri Lanka to Dhanushkodi were dropped off at a sandbar. The Indian Coast Guard rescued them and handed them over to the Coastal Security Group Police,” stated the official report.

The three individuals have been taken into custody and investigations are currently underway to determine the motive and circumstances surrounding the incident.

ICG Inducts Indigenous Patrol Vessel ‘Adamya’

In a separate development, the Indian Coast Guard marked a major milestone in its modernization efforts by inducting Yard 1271 ‘Adamya’, the first Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) under the prestigious 08 FPV Project, at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL).

Designed and built entirely in India, ‘Adamya’ represents a significant leap forward in the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India) initiative. With over 60% indigenous content, the vessel highlights the success of the ‘Make in India’ program in the defence sector.

Key features of the new FPV include:

  • Controllable Pitch Propellers (CPPs)
  • Indigenously developed gearboxes
  • 30mm CRN-91 gun, two 12.7mm remote-control guns
  • Integrated Bridge System (IBS)
  • Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS)
  • Automated Power Management System (APMS)

These advanced technologies will enhance the ICG’s capability in coastal surveillance, maritime law enforcement, search and rescue operations, and the protection of India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

The induction of ‘Adamya’ solidifies India’s growing maritime security architecture and demonstrates the nation’s expanding defence manufacturing expertise.
