After sugar, now a shock from onions: soaring prices leave the public in tears and trouble traders.
Following the rise in sugar prices, the cost of onions has now disrupted the common man’s kitchen budget. Onion prices have reached ₹60–70 per kilogram in several cities across the country. While some consumers are forced to buy onions in smaller quantities, shopkeepers and *dhaba* owners are facing increased difficulties. Rainfall, low supply, and rising demand are considered the primary reasons for this price surge. However, farmers have found some relief due to the better prices available in various markets, including Nashik. To curb the rising prices, the government has initiated a plan to release onions from the buffer stock into the market and transport them to various cities via the ‘Kanda Express’.
