Agniveers to be allowed two additional years of service in the Army; Opposition questions Centre’s decision, SP calls it ‘meaningless’
The central government has introduced a major change to the ‘Agniveer’ scheme. According to the government, all interested Agniveers will now be able to serve in the Army for an additional two years. While the BJP and its allies have hailed the decision as ‘historic,’ the Opposition has raised questions. The Congress has remarked that extending the service tenure of Agniveers by two years is hardly a ‘Diwali gift.’ Meanwhile, the Samajwadi Party (SP) has stated that if they come to power at the Centre, they will abolish the Agniveer system within 24 hours and restore the previous recruitment process.
