Amit Shah sets a deadline for a drug-free Punjab; Congress and AAP retort, “The ‘chitta’ (synthetic drug) menace is a gift from the BJP-SAD.”
The nation celebrated the festival of Dussehra with great fervor, but it was Punjab that grabbed the spotlight. In Ludhiana, Union Home Minister Amit Shah presided over the burning of an effigy of Ravana—symbolizing the ‘Ravana’ of drug abuse. At the Daresi Ground in Ludhiana, he pressed a remote button to set ablaze a 121-foot-tall effigy of Ravana, an act he described as a symbolic end to the scourge of drug addiction. During the event, Amit Shah reiterated his commitment to making Punjab drug-free, assuring that the BJP-led central government would eradicate the drug menace from the state. He highlighted the central government’s successful fulfillment of promises regarding the abrogation of Article 370 and the curbing of terrorism and Naxalism. His statement has now ignited a political firestorm; both the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have launched an attack on Shah, alleging that the BJP and the Akali Dal are the ones responsible for the ‘chitta’ crisis.
