Azhar files nomination for Hyderabad Cricket Association president post
Former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin, banned for life by the Indian cricket board (BCCI) for his role in the match-fixing scandal of 2000, has filed nomination papers for the post of president and secretary in the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA). The HCA elections are scheduled to be held on Jan 17 and Azharuddin will probably withdraw from the race for the secretary's post by Jan 12.
With the BCCI in turmoil following the Supreme Court ruling to implement the Lodha Committee recommendations, Azhar's entry in the fray is likely to set the cat among the pige ons and bring to the fore key issues of legality . For one, the BCCI never did remove his life ban, even though the Andhra High Court had, back in 2012, struck down the ban and directed the board to remove it. Board sources said Azhar's life ban had not been officially revoked and it was up to the Lodha panel now to take a call on the matter.
Azhar himself was unfazed by all the controversy . “The Supreme Court has started the process of cleaning up the game and I am feel it's the right time to do something for the improvement of cricket. Hyderabad cricket has suffered a lot in the last two decades. The state which had at one time seven pla yers in the Indian team, now struggles to find a single player to don the Indian jersey ,“ Azhar said after filing his nomination.
“I don't want to name anyone but unfortunately things haven't been too well with Hyderabad cricket. Wherever I go, I am asked about the Hyderabad cricket and I feel embarrassed when people point out all the wrong things that are happening here. I don't want to dwell on the past but am looking forward to serve the game if given an opportunity ,“ he added.
Azhar, it may be recalled, had been left stumped on 99 Tests following the match-fixing saga. Will he now be allowed to start a fresh innings as administrator?
