On July 26, 2008, the city of Ahmedabad was shaken to its core; it was the day 21 serial blasts rocked the city within a span of just 70 minutes. These explosions claimed the lives of 56 people and left over 200 injured. The Indian Mujahideen claimed responsibility for the attacks. The government registered 35 separate cases naming 78 individuals as accused, and a special court was constituted to hear the matter.
