GROUPS: The Bhartiya Kisan Parishad (BKP) began their march today, with the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) and Samyukt Kisan Morcha (non-political) set to join by 6th December.
WHY: The protest is focused on farmer welfare, with demands including:
▪️10% developed plots for farmers displaced by land acquisition
▪️64.7% increased compensation
▪️Pension for farmers and farm labourers
▪️Employment for children of landless farmers
Ongoing demands include legal MSP guarantee, farm loan waivers and justice for victims of the Lakhimpur Kheri violence during the 2020-21 farmers’ protests.
POLICE ACTION: Security forces have barricaded the Noida-Delhi border. Police are in communication with farmers, according to Shivhari Meena, Additional Commissioner of Police, Noida.
The security plan involves 5,000 police personnel, 1,000 PSC personnel, and arrangements such as water cannons, TGS squads, and fire squads for emergencies.
TRAFFIC: The (foot + tractor) march + police barricades led to major traffic congestion issues for commuters crossing the Delhi-Noida border.
SUPREME COURT has asked protesting farmers to avoid inconveniencing people
In a democratic setup, you can engage in peaceful protests but do not cause inconvenience to people. You all know that the Khanauri border is a lifeline for Punjab. We are not commenting on whether the protest is right or wrong.
