K Kavitha Calls for Strict Punishment

BRS MLC K Kavitha voiced deep grief over the incident, calling it “unfortunate” that crimes against women continue unabated.

“It is unfortunate that such crimes against women are not stopping. We need to take strict measures now… The accused should be punished as soon as possible to send a message to the whole nation,” said Kavitha in an interview with ANI.

She also highlighted the importance of grassroots interventions, recalling how anti-harassment teams were formed in Telangana during KCR’s government to prevent such crimes.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury Blames TMC for Breakdown in Law and Order

Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury launched a scathing attack on the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, claiming that West Bengal is descending into anarchy.

“Law and order in Bengal is deteriorating from bad to worse. Even in a law college hostel, a girl student has been gang-raped. Such audacity is possible only when criminals are emboldened by ruling party connections,” said Chowdhury.

He accused the TMC of “harbouring such criminals”, leading to repeated and brazen attacks against women in the state.

Fourth Arrest Made: Law College Guard Detained

In a fresh development, Kolkata Police on Saturday arrested Pinaki Banerjee (55), the guard of the law college, in connection with the case.

This follows the arrest of three primary accused:

  • Monojit Mishra (31)
  • Zaib Ahmed (19)
  • Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20)

All were either former students or staff members of the institution.

NCW and Legal Action

The National Commission for Women (NCW) took suo motu cognisance of the incident and Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar wrote to the Kolkata Police Commissioner, urging a time-bound investigation under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The arrested individuals are to be produced before the ACJM in Alipore, with police seeking custodial remand for further investigation.

The incident has sparked protests and public outrage across West Bengal, with citizens and activists demanding swift justice and stronger mechanisms to ensure campus safety for women.
