Madrasa System Overhauled in Uttarakhand; Operations Prohibited Without New Recognition

The administration in Uttarakhand has intensified action against madrasas that have failed to secure recognition. In Rudrapur, a madrasa was sealed for the second consecutive day, while a notice was issued to another. A new regulatory framework for madrasas came into effect in the state on July 1, 2026. The 452 madrasas registered under the Uttarakhand Madrasa Board are now required to obtain fresh recognition from the State Minority Education Authority. So far, approximately 200 madrasas have submitted online applications, and the process of conducting on-site inspections is underway. While the government maintains that adherence to prescribed standards is mandatory, the opposition has accused it of targeting a specific religion.
