Major decision by the Himanta government: Government employees in Assam who enter into a second marriage will face dismissal.
In Assam, government employees will no longer be permitted to marry a second time while their first spouse is still living; doing so will result in the loss of their government job. The administration led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has approved an amendment to the Assam Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1964. According to the government, this policy against polygamy will apply uniformly to all government employees, regardless of whether they are Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, or Christian. Furthermore, employees found guilty may also be declared ineligible for any future government employment. The BJP has welcomed this decision, framing it in the context of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and social justice.
