Major setback and hefty fine for the UP government in the Sambhal violence case; NSA charges dropped against Mulla Afroz; Opposition tells the government to mend its ways…

The Supreme Court has dealt a major blow to the UP government regarding Mulla Afroz, the alleged mastermind of the Sambhal violence… The Court has quashed the National Security Act (NSA) charges imposed on Afroz… In this 2024 case, the Court found that the grounds for invoking the NSA were based on a statement Afroz had made while in police custody… Declaring the detention illegal, the Court also imposed a fine of ₹10 lakh on the state government… A bench comprising Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Sheel Nagu had reserved its verdict on the matter on September 8… The Court has now stated that the Uttar Pradesh government could not have issued a preventive detention order based on a confession made by Afroz while in police custody… Afroz’s family appeared satisfied following the Court’s decision.
