Politics over drought intensifies in Maharashtra; MVA to raise farmers’ issue with PM Modi

Political activity has intensified regarding the demand to declare a drought in Maharashtra. MPs from the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) are set to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi today to demand that the entire state be declared drought-hit. Kharif crops in several districts of Maharashtra have been adversely affected by a lack of rainfall and prolonged dry spells. The opposition alleges that there is a delay in declaring a drought despite the dire situation faced by farmers. The MVA MPs will also press the Prime Minister for immediate compensation and relief for the farmers. Congress MP from Amravati, Balwant Wankhade, stated that if a drought is declared in Maharashtra, he would celebrate by lighting lamps, just as lamps were lit on the Prime Minister’s birthday.
