Sikkim tunnel accident: Samardung tunnel blocked by debris, methane gas becomes challenge in rescue

A major accident took place in the Samardung Tunnel under construction in the district of Sikkim. After Monday’s landslide, the entrance gate of the tunnel was completely blocked by debris, trapping laborers working inside. 7 laborers have been confirmed dead in the accident, while 20 laborers are still trapped inside the tunnel. Teams of SDRF, NDRF, Sikkim Police, Fire and Emergency Service, NHPC and Health Department are involved in the rescue operation. The rescue operation has become extremely challenging due to the suspected leakage of methane gas in the tunnel. There have also been reports of some rescue workers fainting during the rescue.
