The Ganga and Yamuna display a furious surge from Prayagraj to Varanasi; ghats and roads are submerged—is a flood imminent?
Water levels of the Ganga and Yamuna in Prayagraj have once again begun to rise rapidly. After steadily receding for nearly a week, the water levels in both rivers have suddenly surged, heightening anxiety among residents of the riverbanks. Water has started encroaching upon low-lying areas; the very ghats where people were seen bathing and performing rituals just days ago are now being claimed by the rising river. The rising Ganga is worsening the situation not only in Prayagraj but also in Varanasi, bringing the river dangerously close to the danger mark. The rising waters have completely transformed the landscape of Kashi’s 84 ghats.
