Why did Ajay Devgn back out of a clash with Aamir Khan and Rajinikanth?
Ajay Devgn is currently in Hyderabad shooting for Rohit Shetty‘s Golmaal Again. The fourth instalment of the Golmaal franchise looks interesting and while we are super excited to see the movie, we don’t yet know as to when the film is going to hit the screens. When the team had announced the movie, Rohit and Ajay had revealed it would release this Diwali. However, with a slight delay in starting off, there was an uncertainty about the release. But with the speed in which they are shooting, we guess they would have easily made it for a Diwali release. However, the makers have decided against a Diwali release. And this is because of the two other releases – Rajinikanth’s 2.0 and Aamir Khan’s Secret Superstar.
Yes, Ajay Devgn seems to have backed out of a clash with Aamir Khan and Rajinikanth. His reason is very apt and we guess it was one of the smartest decisions he has taken! Golmaal 4 and 2.0 were already going to clash this Diwali and Secret Superstar was no where in picture before last week. The makers of Golmaal Again were trying to get an appropriate screen space for their film and they they had even got an assurance earlier in the year. As a source revealed to DNA After Hrs, “Ajay and the Reliance heads (who are backing the film) were in talks with distributors and were enquiring if, despite the clash, they would still manage to get at least 2,400-2,600 screens for their film. The distributors had assured him that much initially, and it’s not surprising given that it’s a Rohit Shetty entertainer and more than that, a really popular franchise.” However, things have changed in the last couple of weeks. With 2.0 getting more screens and Secret Superstar coming in to the picture, the makers of Golmaal Again were in a fix. They would not get their desired screen space and hence, Ajay and his team decided to back off. As an exhibitor revealed to the daily, “2.0 is going to dominate down South, because it is a Rajinikanth film and it’s no secret that he is worshipped in the region. His films are made for the masses. Also, one must not forget that the major reason why Akshay Kumar works for that film is because of his huge hold in North India, which most dubbed South films lack. So, 2.0 is going to work big time up North as well and that meant major screen crunch for Golmaal 4 if it clashed with the Rajini-Akshay starrer. Another huge reason why Golmaal and 2.0 cannot clash is because they are made for similar audiences — the youth and families. But Aamir’s Secret Superstar has a very different audience base — it’s made largely for the metro urban multiplex audiences and is a relatively niche film. So Secret Superstar won’t be that affected by the release of 2.0 on Diwali. Whoever wants to watch it will anyway watch it and Aamir knows this film won’t bring in the numbers that his other films do. After all, he just has an extended guest appearance.”
The source further revealed that Ajay didn’t want to make it a three-way clash, so he has backed out and is now zeroing on another date. Obviously, Golmaal Again deserves a wide release during a good weekend. But with no such weekend available this year, we guess it will now be released next year.
