57th GST Council Meeting: No harsh action for minor errors; power to arrest officials revoked

Delhi Desk: In a major relief to taxpayers during the 57th GST Council meeting, a decision was taken to abolish the power of arrest under GST and raise the threshold for prosecution from ₹1 crore to ₹5 crore. Additionally, the provision for a minimum prison sentence was removed, and the general penalty was reduced from ₹25,000 to ₹10,000. However, the recovery of interest and proportionate penalties for delayed returns, delayed tax payments, or errors will continue. Notably, no changes were made to GST rates during the meeting.
