Farmers’ Uprising in Amritsar: Protest Against the Bhagwant Mann Government Led by Sarwan Singh Pandher
In Punjab, farmers’ anger over the issue of drug abuse has spilled onto the streets. At the Golden Gate in Amritsar, the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee and other organizations staged a strong protest against the Punjab government. Led by farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher, the protesters burned an effigy of the Bhagwant Mann-led government and demanded strict action against the drug trade. Amid a call for a ‘Punjab Bandh’ (shutdown), farmers raised slogans against the government. Farmer leaders claimed that the shutdown received public support. Meanwhile, ambulances and other emergency services were exempted from the shutdown.
