Freedom of Religion Law to Come into Effect in Maharashtra on August 28; No Bail Provision

A major legal change regarding religious conversion is set to take place in Maharashtra. The Devendra Fadnavis government has issued a notification to implement the Maharashtra Freedom of Religion Act, 2026. The new law is scheduled to come into effect on August 28, 2026. This legislation mandates strict action against religious conversions brought about through force, coercion, fraud, or inducement. Conviction under the Act could result in imprisonment of up to seven years and a fine, with the offense classified as non-bailable. Meanwhile, individuals wishing to convert voluntarily must submit an application 60 days in advance, following a prescribed procedure. The law also incorporates stringent provisions for cases involving minors, women, mentally ill individuals, and members of Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST).
