Maulana Sajid Rashidi, President of the All India Imam Association, has made a controversial statement regarding Kanwariyas. Rashidi asked, “Are those who beat up uniformed police officers devotees of Shiva? Are those who attack school vans filled with children devotees of Shiva? Are those who attack vans carrying patients devotees of Shiva? Is this the teaching Lord Shiva gave them? Young men and women dancing while intoxicated—are they devotees of Shiva? These are not devotees of Shiva; they are addicts and stoners.” Following this statement, BJP MLA Nand Kishore Gurjar submitted a formal complaint seeking the registration of an FIR against the Maulana and launched a scathing attack on him.
