Milk prices hiked in Mumbai; Rs 9 per litre increase sparks public outcry

Mumbaikars have been hit by another wave of inflation. Effective September 1, 2026, the price of loose milk (sourced directly from dairies/stables) in Mumbai and surrounding areas has risen by Rs 9 per litre, reaching Rs 102 per litre; previously, it was priced at Rs 93 per litre. This hike has raised concerns about the impact on household budgets, with families consuming one litre of milk daily facing an additional monthly expense of approximately Rs 270. However, the price of packaged milk remains unchanged under this decision. Mumbaikars have expressed their displeasure over the price hike, and the issue has also triggered a political row. The opposition has targeted the government over rising prices, while NDA allies have attributed the hike to the ongoing war in West Asia and rising operational costs.
