UP Government’s Diwali Gift to Ujjwala Beneficiaries: Free Cylinders Announced; SP Raises Questions

Desk: Ahead of Diwali, the Yogi government of Uttar Pradesh has approved a proposal to continue the scheme providing two free LPG cylinder refills to Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries during the 2026-27 financial year. Under this initiative, the first cylinder will be provided between October and December 2026 (coinciding with Diwali), and the second between January and March 2027 (coinciding with Holi). The state government will spend ₹2,142.78 crore on this scheme. While the government’s objective is to provide clean fuel to poor families, the Samajwadi Party has questioned the decision, linking it to elections and criticizing the move.
