West Bengal By-elections: Historic BJP Victory in Nandigram; Party Also Triumphs in Muslim-Majority Rejinagar
Desk: The BJP has registered major victories in the by-elections held for the Nandigram and Rejinagar assembly seats in West Bengal. Hasirani Rath won in Nandigram by a margin of 1,22,753 votes, while the BJP’s Shakharabh Sarkar emerged victorious in Rejinagar by 75,748 votes. Hasirani Rath is the mother of Chandranath Rath—a former personal assistant to Suvendu Adhikari—who was murdered on May 6 of this year. Meanwhile, the BJP’s victory in the Muslim-majority constituency of Rejinagar is being viewed as politically significant. On the other hand, following the defeat, the Democratic TMC has leveled serious allegations against the BJP. These results are likely to intensify the political debate in Bengal.
