BMC negligence claims life of 60-year-old man; swept away in open manhole
Persistent heavy rainfall in Mumbai has brought significant trouble for residents, and a case of gross negligence by the BMC has come to light amidst the downpour. A 60-year-old man, Aslam Shaikh, died after falling into an open manhole and being swept away. Due to waterlogging in the Chandavali area, he failed to spot the open manhole, fell in, and was carried away by the current. A joint search and rescue operation was subsequently launched by the fire brigade and the municipal corporation’s disaster management team, and the man’s body has been recovered. Additionally, an announcement has been made to provide compensation of up to ₹10 lakh to the family.
