Government’s major decision on UPI charges: Zero charges on UPI and RuPay payments up to ₹2,000.

No charges will be levied on UPI payments of up to ₹2,000. The Central Government has clarified the position regarding digital transactions of up to ₹2,000 made via UPI and RuPay debit cards; banks or payment system providers cannot impose any direct or indirect charges up to this limit. Notably, Section 10A of the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007, was amended in August 2026 through the Taxation and Other Laws (Amendment) Act, 2026. Following this, speculation had intensified regarding potential charges on UPI payments exceeding ₹2,000. The Ministry of Finance has now clarified that there will be no fees for UPI and RuPay debit card payments up to ₹2,000. However, no final decision has been taken yet regarding the imposition of charges on UPI payments exceeding ₹2,000.
