‘Vande Mataram’ Bill passed in Rajya Sabha; heated debate between the ruling party and the opposition!
On Wednesday, July 29, 2026—the 10th day of the Monsoon Session—the ‘Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026’ (also known as the ‘Vande Mataram’ Bill) was passed in the Rajya Sabha. Following a debate, the Upper House of Parliament approved the measure. Under this amendment, anyone who intentionally insults ‘Vande Mataram’ while it is being sung faces up to three years in prison. Protocols similar to those for ‘Jana Gana Mana’ will also apply to ‘Vande Mataram’. Although the opposition opposed the bill, it was passed after securing a majority.
