President Murmu Approves Gujarat UCC Bill; Polygamy Banned and Live-in Registration Made Mandatory
The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) for Gujarat has received the President’s assent. With this, Gujarat has become the second state in the country—after Uttarakhand—to secure presidential approval for a UCC. It will be implemented once the state government notifies the rules. The Gujarat UCC includes several key provisions, such as the mandatory registration of marriages and divorces, the registration of live-in relationships, a ban on polygamy, and defined legal procedures for divorce. However, the Scheduled Tribe community has been exempted from its purview. The President’s approval of the UCC has sparked a stir in political circles. The opposition has raised questions regarding the move, while the BJP describes it as a significant step towards a uniform civil system. The VHP has also welcomed the decision.
