Turbat Tragedy Families Protest Alleged Custodial Deaths of Two Missing Youths in Balochistan
Tensions have escalated in Turbat, the administrative hub of Balochistan’s Kech district, as families of two missing young men staged a peaceful protest outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office. The demonstrators are demanding justice for what they claim were custodial killings carried out by Pakistani security forces.
The protest centers around 20-year-old Saifullah, who was reportedly picked up by security personnel on April 20. His family filed a missing person report on April 23 but received no official response. Shockingly, on June 13, authorities informed them that Saifullah had been killed in an “armed encounter” on April 29 and buried without the family’s knowledge or consent. The location of his grave remains undisclosed.
In a similar incident, another youth, Shahjahan, was allegedly detained on April 14. His family was left in the dark for nearly two months until June 13, when they were told he too had died in an encounter and was secretly buried without their permission.
Both families have rejected the official version of events, insisting that their sons were in state custody and were killed extrajudicially. The shocking claims have sparked outrage among locals, many of whom have joined the sit-in protest, demanding:
- Identification of the burial sites
- Independent investigations
- An end to enforced disappearances
- Accountability for alleged custodial killings
The Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) condemned the incidents in a public statement, describing them as part of a systemic pattern of violence and human rights violations in Balochistan. The BYC expressed solidarity with the families and reiterated its demand for immediate action, including independent judicial probes into the deaths of Saifullah and Shahjahan.
As the protest continues, the silence from Pakistani authorities only deepens the concerns surrounding enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings in the restive province.
