Assam Government’s Major Move Against Polygamy: 20% Salary Deduction for Remarriage Without Divorce

Desk: The Assam government is preparing to take strict action against government employees who remarry without obtaining a legal divorce. According to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, a proposal is being considered wherein, alongside departmental action, 20 percent of the employee’s salary would be transferred to the first wife’s bank account. To avail of this, the first wife would need to submit an application to the government. The proposal aims not only to curb remarriage but also to safeguard the financial rights of the first wife.
