Supreme Court on Delhi: ‘Elections are not imminent, so why the rush?’ — Court seeks response from Election Commission regarding Form-6

Supreme Court on Delhi: ‘Elections are not imminent, so why the rush?’ — Court seeks response from Election Commission regarding Form-6

The Supreme Court has questioned the Election Commission (EC) regarding the removal of approximately 4.3 million (43 lakh) names from the electoral rolls in Delhi. The Court asked why an individual who is already a registered voter should be required to fill out ‘Form-6’ again. Furthermore, the Supreme Court observed that since elections are not immediately forthcoming in Delhi, the Election Commission should not place such heavy emphasis on a deadline; the time limit could be extended. The Court noted that many laborers, street vendors, and daily-wage workers in Delhi often move from place to place for work; therefore, the Commission should take the initiative to reach out to them, rather than placing the entire responsibility on the individuals themselves.
